What is Clinical Somatic Education
Clinical Somatic Education is neuromuscular education that uses the groundbreaking technique developed by Thomas Hanna to retrain muscle memory and relieve pain. Thomas Hanna discovered that Most chronic pain, joint degeneration, and recurring injuries are caused by the way we use our bodies – the way we sit, stand, and move throughout our lives. And our nervous system is responsible for telling us how to use our bodies. Our nervous system tells us which muscles to contract, when to release them, and how to hold our bodies when we’re just sitting or standing still.
As we grow up, our nervous system actually learns how to make us do these things. The more we repeat a certain posture or movement, the more deeply learned that muscular pattern becomes. After a while, our patterns become so deeply learned that we don’t even have to think about them. This is what we call muscle memory.
Muscle memory is a wonderful thing, because it allows us to get through our daily lives efficiently. But unfortunately, sometimes we learn patterns that damage our bodies–like sitting hunched over at a computer. The only way to change these deeply learned muscular patterns is to re-educate the nervous system, and that is what Clinical Somatics does. It engages the nervous system in an active learning process that consists of very slow, focused, conscious movements. The movement techniques used in Clinical Somatics teach the nervous system how to release chronic muscle tension and stand and move in natural, efficient ways so that you aren’t putting yourself in pain or doing damage to your body.
CSE is the only scientifically-based sensory motor training that teaches you how and why muscle tension develops and what you can do about it. CSE teaches you life-long skills that improve your ability to self-sense, self-monitor, and self-correct. You will be empowered to take care of yourself instead of relying on others.
Some of the Conditions that CSE can Help Me With include:
- Joint and muscle pain
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
- Sciatica
- Sacroiliac Joint Pain
- Hip, knee and foot pain
- Sacroiliac dysfunction
- Repetitive use injuries
- Postural imbalances
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Tension headaches
- Accident traumas and whiplash
- Breathing problems
- Anxiety
- Frozen shoulder syndrome
- Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)
The Sessions are conducted on a wide and low table, the practitioner guides movement and uses different techniques to teach you how to release stiff, habituated tensions in full body patterns and encourage smooth, unrestricted movement. The range of motion is always in your control, and we never push through painful movements. CSE is not body work and we do not manipulate and work from the outside. We educate and give hands on feedback, so you can regain control over your movement again – you are the active participant in these lessons!
What is Somatic Movement Classes
These classes are self-care movement classes that are delivered face to face on Wednesdays and online on Thursdays mornings over a period of 6 weeks. You can sign up for a six week course or use the drop in on the schedule. The Thursday online class is geared more towards movers with some experience in Somatics, while the Wednesday class focuses on introductory work. Both classes are gentle and restorative in nature, so suitable if you nurture any injuries or chronic health conditions. For these classes you will need a mat and a cushion for comfort.
